A new month is upon us and we are quickly approaching the holiday season. And you know what that means, right? Holiday parties where we can glam up and look good. There’s nothing wrong with wearing make-up but I know so many people who don’t properly wash it off at the end of the day. Its not good for your skin to leave make-up sitting on it over night and can cause a lot of problems.
I’ve been guilty of leaving make-up on myself. You know the story; you get in late, your tired and the last thing you want to do is spend 10 minutes washing your face. Here’s a tip – leave some make-up cleansing pads, or a gentle make-up remover with cotton pads on your night table. This way, if you don’t have time to properly wash your face, you can still get make-up off and avoid any overnight damage.
I use Jules of the Earth’s All in One Facial Cleanser and Make-Up Remover. It works to both clean and get off even waterproof make-up products naturally and gently. You can apply it to damp skin and then wipe it off with a hot, damp cloth that relaxes and soothes the skin. I’ve also just used it on a cotton pad to wipe off make-up when I’m stuck for time or too tired.
The All in One Cleanser uses natural ingredients, like soothing cucumber, healing Aloe Vera, lavender, damask rose, witch hazel, pro Vitamin B 5 and COQ10. We’ll talk more about those ingredients next week. This product is vegan friendly, paraben free, chemical free and not tested on animals!
Sleeping in make-up side effects
When we sleep in make-up we expose our skin to free radicals, which make-up can cling to. Free radicals are what causes the breakdown of collagen that is healthy, resulting in fine lines. It can also clog our pores and cause an acne flare up. The more often you sleep in your make-up, the more clogged those pores get, which can often result in a microcomedone formation, attracting even more bacteria that causes acne to our pores.
Night time is when our skin is meant to rest, heal and regenerate. During the day our skin can accumulate a lot of oxidative stress, so it needs that time at night to recover. Leaving make-up on overnight kind of blocks this process and it can lead to premature ageing.
Even sleeping in just mascara can cause issues for you. It may not cause acne or the development of fine lines, but mascara and eyeliner left on overnight gets rubbed by our pillows and can end up in the eye, causing significant eye irritation. It can also result in the oil glands and hair follicles on our eyelids to clog up, which can cause a build-up of bacteria that leads to inflammation. This can result in small bumps, known as hordeolums or styes to form. Leaving your mascara on can also cause your eyelashes to become brittle, break easily and shed a lot more, thinning them out.
Sleeping in make-up can also dry out your skin because it forms a residue that blocks moisturizers and skin care products from being able to absorb into the skin. The same goes for leaving lipsticks on overnight, which can dry out and caused chapped lips.
So, is skipping those extra few minutes to wash your face worth the damage it can cause over time? Definitely not! As mentioned above, a great product to try out is Jules of the Earth’s All In One Facial Cleanser & Make-up Remover. Its natural, gentle and really does the job without having to scrub away at your skin. Give it a try!
